Clinical Use The immunochemical fecal occult blood test (iFOBT) method is an effective, accessible, and simple assay that has been developed to replace the guaiac FOBT assay in the screening for colorectal cancer (CRC). Its advantages over the guaiac FOBT are:
- No diet or medication restrictions because it is specific for undigested human hemoglobin, thus making for better patient compliance.
- Increased specificity with high sensitivity thus having fewer false-positives for CRC.
- Specific for lower GI bleeding making it ideal for CRC screening. Screening can begin immediately with the next bowel movement.
