Clinical Use The white blood cell count is useful in the diagnosis and management of infection, inflammatory disorders, hematopoietic maligancies, evaluation of myelopoietic disorders, drug effects, and response to various cytotoxic agents. The differential count is performed to acquire further information concerning the above states and enables one to arrive at values for the absolute value of discreet WBC population. Absolute values for individual cell populations are obtained from a combination of the WBC count and the % of each cell type from the differential.
